A business must register once its annual supplies reach the mandatory threshold of OMR 38,500. From OMR 19,250 it may register by choice. Both amounts are set in a Chairman's decision (PDF).
The application goes to the Tax Authority electronically. On approval it tells you your tax identification number, your registration start date and when your returns are due.
No one may charge VAT unless registered with the Tax Authority. Registered businesses show their prices including VAT.
The tax invoice shows what was sold and the VAT charged. Keep tax invoices for at least 10 years.
Returns are filed electronically after each tax period, even when no VAT is due. Output VAT minus input VAT is what you pay, or claim back.
No VAT is charged on exports of goods and services when the conditions in the VAT law and its regulations are met.
Points 2 to 6 come from the Tax Authority's VAT business FAQ (Arabic PDF), read on 2 November 2026. This is a summary to help you plan your books, not tax advice. More guides are on the Tax Authority's VAT guidelines page.
Your VAT figures build up as you invoice and record bills, so there is nothing to re-type at the end of the period.
Your base currency is set from the country you choose at sign-up, so choose it carefully.
Set up the standard rate and the zero rate as tax rates, once.
Pick the VAT treatment on each line and send the invoice by email.
Attach the supplier's bill so the input VAT has its paper trail.
Check the period's figures, then file your return with the Tax Authority.
Run 50+ financial reports that update the moment you record a transaction. Decide with real numbers, not with last quarter's spreadsheet.
