GST 2.0 slab rates (current)

India moved to a simplified GST structure — popularly called GST 2.0 — effective 22 September 2025, following the 56th GST Council meeting. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were removed and most goods and services now fall under four rates.

RateTypically applies to
0%Nil-rated & exempt items — most fresh food, many essential medicines, individual health & life insurance
5%Daily essentials, packaged food, most medicines, EVs, agricultural goods
18%Standard rate — electronics, appliances, most services, apparel, small cars
40%Luxury & sin goods — aerated/caffeinated drinks, premium vehicles, tobacco-related items

A few special rates sit outside the main slabs (for example, 3% on precious metals like gold, 1.5% on diamonds, and 0.25% on rough precious/semi-precious stones). Tobacco and pan masala stay on 28% + cess transitionally. Use the Custom rate box for these. Always confirm the rate and HSN/SAC code for your specific product before filing.

The four components of GST

CGST

Central GST — collected by the central government on intra-state supply, charged alongside SGST (usually each is half the total rate).

SGST

State GST — collected by the state government on intra-state supply, charged alongside CGST.

IGST

Integrated GST — collected by the centre on inter-state supply and imports, then shared with the destination state.

UTGST

Union Territory GST — applies in place of SGST for supplies within a union territory, charged alongside CGST.

Add GST vs Remove GST

Add GST (exclusive): your amount is the base price, so GST is added on top. GST = Amount × Rate, and Total = Amount + GST.

Remove GST (inclusive): your amount already contains GST, so the tool works backwards to the base. Base = Amount ÷ (1 + Rate/100), and GST = Amount − Base.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current GST rate in India?

Under GST 2.0, effective 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were removed. A few special rates (3%, 1.5%, 0.25%) still apply to items like precious metals and stones.

How do I calculate GST on an amount?

To add GST to a base price, multiply the amount by the GST rate: GST = Amount × Rate ÷ 100, then Total = Amount + GST. For example, ₹10,000 at 18% gives ₹1,800 GST and ₹11,800 total.

How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?

Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100) to get the base, then subtract to find the GST. For ₹11,800 at 18%: base = 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000, so GST = ₹1,800.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For sales within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. For sales across states (inter-state) and imports, the whole amount is charged as IGST instead.
